Photography is continuing to evolve and every year, people come up with new ways to develop something new. Check out the list of 2020’s photography trends below!
- Film photography rose… once again
- We’ve seen the sudden resurrection of a lot of things these past few years, especially in fashion. We’ve seen the return of fanny packs, track pants, grunge makeup, and many more. But one more thing that has been coming up more recently is the use of film cameras and even apps that create the same effect as film cameras back in the ‘90s.
The number of users going back to this ‘90s trend has been rising and it seems like it won’t be going away any time soon. More than the nostalgia, analog cameras are an amazing tool that can help improve one’s technical and creative skills. The cameras of today use all kinds of settings that help enhance the photo, but with an analog camera, there is no second chance. You can’t check the photo right away and delete it as you wish. Photographers learn how to utilize light, angles and rather than simply relying on trial and error.
- Video took over
- Everybody seems to be shooting videos. But even with the use of a really good phone, it’s not possible to record high-quality videos like the ones professionals produce. Videos mean that people can watch your content longer than with just plain still photos. In today’s time, it’s so difficult to catch the attention of the average social media user. You would have to put up a large amount of effort to capture their attention and if your content isn’t as competitive, then you can kiss your audience goodbye. Having videos allow you more leverage when it comes to capturing attention because moving images tend to be more eye-catching especially when you’re scrolling through your photo at the speed of light. Having people focus on your creations for more than a split second can be considered as a huge success.
- Issues were raised
- Photography has always been used as an avenue to support causes, show how the world works, and how different it is for everyone. More than an expression of creativity, photography has also been used as a tool to spread awareness about pressing issues around the world.
Photographers nowadays have become ambassadors for change by being active in certain NGO groups, using their images to invoke change.
- Drones were everywhere
- The drone fever has come a long way since it started. There was a certain novelty in seeing places from an aerial point of view and suddenly everyone felt the need to have a drone, but back then only those who had the budget were able to purchase a drone, but today you can buy a drone that’s much cheaper than a new phone.
- Candid photographs
- One of the most popular trends nowadays is authenticity. You would think that this would only be applicable to news, but it also goes for photography. People nowadays want authentic, and we’re not talking about the whole “unedited” mumbo-jumbo, but we’re talking about real, candid photography. Photography that catches the essence of the subject and the natural state of it. Captured moments that are candid add a bit more connection with the person seeing the photo and the person who took the photo.
People now want to go out and shoot the back alleys, sidewalks, parks, etc. because it allows them to capture more natural scenarios rather than have models act out a certain shot that shouldn’t be acted out in the first place. One more reason is that audiences tend to appreciate authenticity now more than ever.
- Outdoor photography is still going to be a thing
- Outdoor photography has always been a part of any photographer’s arsenal and it’s safe to say that is should continue being a part of it. Showcasing the beautiful landscapes of the world has become a norm, but more and more people are giving attention to it. Maybe it’s just their wanderlust acting up but then again, everyone wants to travel. Outdoor photography gives people a chance to see the world when they can’t travel to those places personally. It gives them that eagerness to see it and entices them to just move.
Nowadays, taking breathtaking photos of the outdoors has become much easier. With technology, you can capture photos in an instant and edit them the same way you would through a DSLR, and Photoshop (or any other editing software).
2019 was a year with new and not-so-new trends in photography. There have been countless trends that have come and go throughout the year, and we’re here to bring you the next ones for the upcoming year.
Since the rise of technology, the photography business has been steadily growing in numbers. The advancement in technology has resulted in a variety of trends that have slowly started to impact the industry. While countless trends are affecting the niche, there are a few that look set to continue making their presence felt. Here are 2020’s upcoming photography trends!
Some trends that affect product photography industry
- DSLR; a niche
- DSLR cameras were one of the biggest trends to affect the industry over the years. The DSLR camera offered quite a bit of benefit for the person using them. During its rise, the quality of the photos it produced was far superior to the photos you were getting from phones. The benefits, then, seemed to have been endless as more and more models were showing up every year.
But nowadays, more and more people are gravitating towards the more convenient alternative, smartphones. With today’s technology, it’s hard not to choose a smartphone over a DSLR camera. While it is true that the DSLR camera poses amazing quality photos, smartphone technology has not been slowing down. The quality of photos that you get is actually almost the same quality as that of DSLR cameras. Coupled with their increased portability and reduced cost, photographers across every niche, have been switching over to them.
- Video Take Over
- Images have been used to promote everything for the longest time but in recent years, there has been a large shift to videos. Technology has allowed videos to be compact and can be expanded where they’re delivered to. People tend to pay longer attention to videos since they’re essentially, moving images and anything that moves, the human eye tends to focus on compared to still images.
- Going Mobile
- There has been a steady increase in the number of smartphones all over the world and every release, the camera feature on these smartphones have been getting better and better. More and more people have been using smartphones instead of actual cameras. This means that photographers needed to adapt to the kind of photographs that smartphones produces.
- Raw and Unedited
- More and more people are looking for authenticity and it’s what they crave for. The public has been shying away from any manipulation in photographs. Because of this, photographers are going to have to try harder to get the right photos because their viewers won’t be looking forward to photo manipulations.
- 360-Degree Photography
- This type of photography has been growing a steady following especially across the majority of social media platforms. It has gained popularity and has been slowly integrated into many large eCommerce websites. More and more brands have been taking advantage of the technology and have slowly been learning how to integrate it into their marketing strategies.
- Intensity
- The photography trends that would come up for the coming year is intensity and vivid colors. While heavy manipulation is discouraged, this doesn’t mean that a product photographer shouldn’t be able to use a certain amount of editing to enhance the image.
- Cloud Storage
- Regardless of the device you’ll be using, it will be online-capable. This means that there are a number of ways to store and share images. One of the biggest and most obvious benefits is security. With cloud storage, gone are the days where you had to have your photos developed or had to have a flashdrive to give someone a copy of the files. Now you can just link the photos to them through the cloud storage plus there’s no physical waste since it’s all stored online.
The year is coming to an end and there have been a few trends coming up for photography. There will always be new trends as technology continues to evolve and with that, photography.
